Have you ever been so focused on the future that you totally missed what was going on around you? I have. Now, have you ever been so focused on the future that you missed something God had for you? I have. Unfortunately, I think a lot of people have suffered from this regrettable state.
We get concentrated on the future. We dream of that better job, nicer car, and happier family. We dream of all kinds of “somedays.” However, when we are so focused on “someday” we usually don’t actually start doing anything to reach that someday. It’s just a dream. Unfortunately, this results in a lot of missed opportunities. God has plans for each one of us but are our “someday” dreams getting in the way and keeping us from realizing those plans?
Jeremy Camp wrote a song titled “Keep Me In the Moment.” The chorus of the song says, “Oh Lord, keep me in the moment. Help me live with my eyes wide open, 'cause I don’t want to miss what you have for me. Oh Lord, show me what matters, throw away what I’m chasing after, 'cause I don’t want to miss what you have for me…”
I love those words. They sum up life at its best. Instead of chasing those “someday” dreams, we should be asking God to keep us in the moment and show us what he has for us right then and there.
In the Bible, we find lots of examples where God’s people didn’t live in the moment and they totally missed what God had to show them. When Elijah ran off into the desert, because he was afraid of Jezebel’s threat, he was living in fear of the future. He was afraid that he was going to die. He was so focused on the future that he didn’t take the time to realize that God is more powerful than Jezebel could ever dream of being and that he had nothing to fear. If God wanted him alive there was no person or thing that could kill him.
Instead of living with our minds constantly thinking about “someday,” living in fear of the future, or anchoring ourselves in the past, let’s ask God to help us live in the moment with Him. Let’s not miss what he has for us. You’ll be surprised how free you will feel.
